Where a Sabah journey stops being about the forest.

After ten days of early starts, leech socks and forest that closes over your head, most people want two or three days of horizon. Semporna, on Sabah's south-east coast, is where that happens: shallow water, sand, boats, and a maritime culture that has been here far longer than any of the rest of it.

We treat it as a coda rather than a headline. It is a different Sabah — the light is different, the pace is different, and after the interior that contrast is most of the point. A few slow days on the coast is what we build, and we build it at the end.

There is something you should know before you plan around this coast. The British and German foreign offices currently advise against all but essential travel to the islands and dive sites off eastern Sabah, and travelling against that advice can invalidate your travel insurance. That is why we do not sell diving here and do not build itineraries out to the islands. We would rather tell you plainly and let you decide than quietly leave it out of the brochure.

The shape of a few days

Day one — Down the coast

Overland from Tawau or Lahad Datu, arriving in the afternoon. Nothing planned for the first evening, deliberately.
Day two — On the water

A day out on a boat along the coast, with time to swim. Back before the light goes.
Day three — Out

A slow morning, then the transfer to Tawau for the flight home or on to Kota Kinabalu.

Before you come

Getting there: Fly into Tawau and drive, which also makes this a natural way to end a journey that started in the interior.
Travel advice: The UK and German foreign offices currently advise against all but essential travel to the islands and dive sites off eastern Sabah. Check the current advice for your own country before you plan, and be aware that travelling against it can affect your insurance. We build to the mainland coast for exactly this reason, and we will tell you if the advice changes.
Diving: We do not arrange it here, and we would be straight with you about why rather than pretend it is not a question people ask.
The communities: This coast has a long maritime history and people still live by it. Where a visit involves anyone's home or livelihood, it happens with their agreement and on their terms, or it does not happen.
