The Kinabatangan

The easiest wildlife watching in Borneo, and the clearest argument for why the rest of it matters.

The Kinabatangan runs five hundred and sixty kilometres, which makes it Sabah's longest river. It rises in the interior — in Imbak Canyon, in fact — and reaches the sea east of Sandakan, and along the lower stretch the forest survives as a narrow corridor between the water and the plantations.

That corridor is the whole story. Squeezed into a strip a few hundred metres wide, the wildlife of a much larger forest is concentrated along the banks, which is why an hour on a boat here can show you more than a day of walking elsewhere. Ten primate species use it, including proboscis monkeys and orangutans; all eight of Borneo's hornbills have been recorded; kingfishers work the margins, estuarine crocodiles lie up on the mud, and the Bornean pygmy elephants move through in herds when they choose to.

It is also, if you look at it straight, a conservation emergency dressed up as a wildlife spectacle. The animals are easy to see here because they have nowhere else to go. We would rather say that than sell you the boat ride without it — and most guests find the river more affecting, not less, for knowing.

Days are simple. A cruise at first light, a long slow middle, a cruise again as the light drops, and a night walk for anyone who wants one. You stay at a river lodge at Bilit, and the boat leaves from the jetty below it.

The shape of three nights

  1. Day one — On to the river

    Overland to Bilit and into your lodge, with time to settle before the afternoon cruise. The first evening on the water is usually the one people remember.

  2. Days two and three — Dawn, dusk, and the pause between

    A cruise at first light and another late in the afternoon, with the middle of the day free. Night walks on the trails behind the lodge. Oxbow lakes and side tributaries if the water is high enough.

  3. Day four — Out

    A last cruise at dawn, breakfast, and the drive out through Sandakan for onward flights.

Before you come

Getting there
Fly to Sandakan, then road to Bilit. It is the most straightforward access of any of our destinations, and it pairs neatly with Tabin or Danum on the same coast.

Elephants are the ones people ask about, and they are the ones nobody can promise. They move where the food is. We will tell you honestly what the recent sightings have been for your dates rather than what we would like them to be.

Season
The river is worth seeing all year, but the wetter months push the water up into the side channels and change what is reachable. We will tell you what your dates actually mean rather than sell around it.
